The Phantom of the Opera will return to New York in a new immersive production, Masquerade, opening on July 31 at 218 West 57th Street.
The announcement arrives two years after The Phantom of the Opera closed on Broadway, following a historic 35-year run that made it the longest-running show in Broadway history.
The closure marked the end of an era, but the arrival of Masquerade signals a new chapter: one that builds on the legacy of the musical while reflecting a growing appetite for immersive experiences.
Masquerade invites guests to move beyond the grand circle and into the Phantom’s world. Theatregoers will traverse the Opera Populaire as characters and music surround them. In keeping with the Phantom’s spirit, further details of the experience remain concealed, acting as an invitation to discover them only by stepping through the doors yourself. Guests are asked to “dress extravagantly” in black, white, or silver and to attend masked, in keeping with the title and theme of the show.
The creative team, led by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus (Waitress, Pippin) and choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, includes a wide roster of designers and collaborators spanning costume, lighting, sound, and immersive design.
Beyond its theatrical ambition, Masquerade reflects the continued vitality of Lloyd Webber’s creative legacy. It draws on the book and lyrics of Sir Richard Stilgoe and Charles Hart, extending the influence of collaborators whose contributions helped define the original musical.
