The original London cast recording of Starlight Express will return to vinyl this summer in a newly remastered zoetrope edition, released on June 7th alongside the musical’s forthcoming London revival.
Starlight Express, written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Richard Stilgoe, first premiered at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in 1984. Directed by Trevor Nunn, choreographed by Arlene Phillips, and designed by John Napier, it pushed the boundaries of what a musical could be with its roller-skating trains racing through the theatre.
The original 1984 album included 28 tracks in full. The new edition revisits 11 of those highlights and adds “Crazy” from the 1992 revision of the show, with animated artwork creating the illusion of moving train tracks by Drew Tetz. The vinyl brings back the voices of Stephanie Lawrence, Frances Ruffelle, Jeff Shankley, Ray Shell, Jeffrey Daniel, and others who defined the show’s original sound.
Starlight Express is currently playing in London’s West End and Bochum, Germany.
